What is Myopia?

Myopia, known as short-sightedness or nearsightedness, is a common vision condition that happens when your eyes do not focus light correctly.

Here are common symptoms that suggest myopia:

  • Eye strain (when your eyes feel tired or sore)
  • Trouble seeing things far away
  • Persistently squinting, blinking excessively
  • Rubbing eyes frequently
  • Headaches

Is Myopia Serious?

Myopia can develop at any age, more frequently in children between ages 6 to 12 as a result of an abnormal elongation of the eyes.

While the experts are still unsure of the exact cause of myopia, risk factors like genetics, prolonged close-up activities and excessive screen time may increase the likelihood of developing myopia.

Myopia can be diagnosed as mild or severe, and should be attended to early to avoid complications.

Managing Myopia

Early intervention of myopia is necessary as it will progressively become worse over time.

Here are some ways to control myopia:

1. Glasses. The optometrist will prescribe you the right prescriptive lenses to give you the clearest possible vision.
2. Contact lenses. Designed to give a more natural look while giving you perfect vision.
3. Ortho-k. Specially designed hard contact lenses to reshape the curvature of your cornea & improve your vision while sleeping at night.
4. Surgery. Laser eye surgery can be done to fix refractive errors.

Delaying your diagnosis may cause persistent eyestrain and headaches.

If left uncared for, mild symptoms can progress to severe myopia.

Severe Cases of Myopia

High myopia may raise the risk of more serious sight conditions later in life, such as cataracts, detached retinas and glaucoma.

There is no cure for myopia - it's recommended to take good care of your eye health and schedule regular routine eye checkups on an annual basis.

Find Out Whether You Have Myopia

When you visit our optometrists for an eye checkup, we will conduct a series of tests to determine your prescription. They include:

1. Autorefractor Test. Used to estimate an objective prescription by using an autorefractor.
2. Visual Acuity/Refraction. Read letters or numbers on a chart while lenses are inserted into a trial frame.
3. Duochrome Test. Determines if the lenses you are wearing are too weak or too strong.
4. Astigmatism Check. Indicates whether you have astigmatism.

After we have determined your prescription, our optometrists will fit your lenses with the frames of your choice.
