Posterior Eye Examination

A posterior eye examination is a medical exam used to assess the health of the retina, the part of the eye responsible for sending visual signals to the brain.

As the disease occurs at the back of the eye, they may be missed out during routine prescriptions checks.

At KJ Optometrists, we utilise a highly specialized Retinal Camera which enables us to detect even the slightest signs of these diseases by examining your retina, optic nerve and macula.

Why is a Posterior Eye Examination Important?

By examining the retina, optic nerve, and macula, eye doctors can identify early signs of eye diseases and provide prompt treatment to prevent vision loss. Some of the most common eye diseases that can be detected through a posterior eye examination include:

  1. Age-related Macular Degeneration: This is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults and is characterized by the gradual deterioration of the macula, the part of the retina responsible for central vision.
  2. Glaucoma: This is a group of diseases that cause progressive damage to the optic nerve, leading to vision loss and blindness. Glaucoma can often go undetected for many years, so regular eye exams are important for early detection.
  3. Diabetic Retinopathy: This is a complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels in the retina and can cause vision loss. People with diabetes are at increased risk for diabetic retinopathy, and regular eye exams can help detect and treat the disease early.
